Privacy Policy

The short version

The plain-English summary. The full detail is below.

Who we are

This policy covers the GainTime iOS app and the GainTime website at gaintime.app. In this policy, "GainTime", "we" and "us" mean the provider of the app. If you have any question about your privacy or want to exercise your rights, contact us at hello@gaintime.app.

GainTime is a personal wellbeing tool. You install it for yourself to gate your own distracting apps and unlock them by moving. It is not a monitoring, parental-control or workplace tool, and the Screen Time permission it uses applies only to your own device and the apps you choose.

What stays on your device

Most of what GainTime handles never leaves your phone and is never collected by us. This includes:

  • The apps and categories you choose to lock. GainTime uses Apple's Family Controls, ManagedSettings and DeviceActivity (Screen Time) frameworks. By Apple's rules and ours, this data stays on your device and is never shared.
  • Your app-usage and screen-time detail. Which apps you open and for how long is used on-device to run the gate. It is never sent to us.
  • Your movement and step data. GainTime uses motion sensors (CoreMotion) and, if you allow it, your step count from Apple Health to detect exercise and bank earned minutes. This calibration and your raw step data stay on the phone.
  • Your schedules and settings. Your gates, chosen exercises and preferences are stored on your device.

If you never create a friends account, GainTime holds nothing about you on any server. The entire core loop, gate your apps, move, unlock, re-lock, works fully offline and privately.

What leaves your device

Data only leaves your phone if you choose to create the optional friends account, so that people you accept can see your progress and cheer you on. If you do, this is everything we store, on our behalf, through our hosting provider:

  • Your account and profile. A unique account identifier, the username (handle) you pick, your display name, and an optional profile photo if you choose to add one.
  • Your movement and streaks. The minutes you earn and your streak counts, with the time they happened, so your feed and streak stay up to date. Never which apps, never raw steps.
  • Your friend connections. Who you have sent or accepted friend requests with, so the feed shows the right people.
  • Referrals. A referral code for your account, and if you invite someone or join through their link, the connection between the two accounts and whether a reward applies.

That is the complete list. We do not send which apps you lock, your app-usage, your raw step count, your calibration, or any Family Controls data. None of that ever leaves your device, whether or not you use the friends account.

Sign in with Apple

The only way to sign in to the friends account is Sign in with Apple. When you use it, Apple gives us an identifier for you and you can choose Apple's Hide My Email so we never see your real email address. We never receive your Apple password. The core app needs no sign-in at all.

Why we process this, and our lawful basis

Under UK GDPR, we process the small amount of friends-account data described above to provide the social features you specifically asked for when you created the account. That is our lawful basis: performing the service at your request. The core app processes nothing off your device, so it needs no such basis.

We use this data for one purpose only: to run the friends feed and referrals, showing your profile, movement and streaks to friends you have accepted, and theirs to you. We do not profile you, advertise to you, or use your data for anything else.

Sharing, tracking and advertising

  • We never sell or rent your data. Not to advertisers, not to data brokers, not to anyone.
  • We do not track you. GainTime contains no third-party advertising or analytics trackers, and does not follow you across other apps or websites. Because nothing is tracked, no App Tracking Transparency prompt is needed.
  • The only "sharing" is the one you set up. Your display name, username, optional photo, movement and streaks are shown to the friends you personally accept, and to no one else.
  • Our hosting provider. The friends-account data is stored for us by our backend provider (Supabase) under their security and data-processing terms. They process it only to host it for us, not for their own purposes.

How long we keep it

We keep your friends-account data only while your account exists. When you delete your account, that data is removed from our server. Data held on your device lives only on your phone and is gone when you delete the app.

Your rights

You have the right to access, correct, delete and export your data, and to object to or restrict its processing. Because the data we hold is minimal and entirely yours, most of this is immediate and in your own hands inside the app. For anything else, email hello@gaintime.app and we will respond. If you are in the UK or EU and are unhappy with how we have handled your data, you also have the right to complain to your local data protection authority (in the UK, the Information Commissioner's Office).

Deleting your account and data

You can delete your account and everything we hold about you at any time, from inside the app: go to your profile, open the friends account, and choose to delete your account. This wipes your data from our server. It does not touch anything on your phone, and the app keeps working without the friends account. You can also email hello@gaintime.app to request deletion.

Children

GainTime is not directed at children under 13, or under the age of digital consent in your country if that is higher. We do not knowingly collect data from children. If you believe a child has created an account, contact us and we will remove it.

Security

Data sent between the app and our server travels over encrypted HTTPS connections. Data on your device is protected by iOS. We keep the amount of data held on any server deliberately small, which is the strongest privacy protection of all.

Changes to this policy

If we change this policy, we will update this page and change the date at the top. If a change is significant, we will make it clear in the app.
